Project Checklist
  • Trisodium phosphate (TSP) or substitute
  • Scraper or spatula
  • Wire brush
  • Stiff bristle broom

Not Previously Painted

  1. Remove any loose mortar or efflorescence (i.e., deposits of white crystals that sometimes leach from various alkaline substrates when moisture is present). Use a wire brush.
  2. Clean the surface with a cleanser such as trisodium phosphate (TSP) or substitute to remove any dirt, stains or dust.
  3. Remove any mildew with a solution of 3 parts water to 1 part bleach, or try using an EPA-registered, mildew-killing cleanser.
  4. After the surface has dried thoroughly from cleaning, apply an acrylic latex primer to aid in the adhesion of the top coat paint as well as to reduce the quantity of paint required for the project.
  5. Finally, apply one or two coats of a premium quality, 100% acrylic latex paint in the desired finish.


 
 

Previously Painted

  1. Remove any loose, flaking or peeling paint by scraping or wire brushing.
  2. Remove any loose mortar or efflorescence with a wire brush.
  3. Clean the surface with a cleanser such as TSP or substitute, to remove any dirt, stains or dust.
  4. Remove any mildew with a solution of 3 parts water to 1 part bleach, or try using an EPA-registered, mildew-killing cleanser.
  5. After the surface has dried thoroughly from cleaning, apply an acrylic latex primer to aid in the adhesion of the top coat paint as well as to reduce the quantity of paint required for the project.
