Paint Technique
Step 1. Tape off all areas where you do not want the finish applied. Apply Valspar base coat with a roller to the entire surface. Allow to dry overnight.

Step 2. Brush a 3 inch border ("cut in") around the ceiling, floor, trim edges and corners. Note: Do not cut in around the entire room at once as this can cause a banded appearance. Rather, brush out the edges in sections. This ensures a wet edge during rolling for an even appearance. Using the color washing brush to apply the Brushed Pearl, cut in along ceiling, floor and molding. Note: Like the basecoat, do not cut in around the entire room at once as this can cause a banded appearance. Rather, brush out the edges in sections. This ensures a wet edge during rolling for an even appearance. Proceed to the main wall brushing in an X pattern over a 4 ft. x 8 ft. area. Apply an even, opaque layer avoiding thick applications.

Step 3. Press the plastic float trowel into the wet surface moving the material in a circular motion. The trowel should grab slightly to create the dimensional swirl effect. If the surface is too wet and the trowel "slips" over the material, it is necessary to wait a little longer before using the trowel. Clean the trowel periodically during application.

Step 4. Continue across the wall applying Brushed Pearl, repeating steps 2 and 3 again. Allow the surface to dry for 4 hours. If a second coat is desired, repeat steps 2 and 3.

Step 5. For added protection, apply a coat of Valspar Faux Clear Protective Finish in the desired sheen. Note: Applying a gloss sheen will heighten the metallic effect of Brushed Pearl.

Tips for Success

Brushed Pearl has a set up time that's necessary to create the swirl or cloud-like appearance with the plastic float trowel. Thickness of application and environmental conditions will greatly affect set up time. To determine the setup time, we recommend applying a finger swatch of the Brushed Pearl to an inconspicuous spot on the wall and rubbing it continuously until it begins to "tack up" and create the swirl finish. This will give you an approximate amount of time to wait before using the trowel.

Try your technique on a practice board before you try it on the walls.

For a simple transformation or quick update, this technique is easy to paint over. No sanding or stripping of the underlying faux finish is needed. Just apply a topcoat of paint and you're done!
