Valspar® Solid Color Concrete Stain/Sealer

For optimal results, your concrete must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, oil or other contaminants before applying Valspar concrete coatings. Concrete that has been previously sealed or that contains excess moisture cannot be coated. To ensure your concrete is able to accept a coating, we recommend you test the surface as instructed below for moisture content and presence of obstructive sealer before beginning this project.

Test for presence of sealer

Sprinkle a few beads of water onto the surface. If they soak into the concrete, you're ready to begin. If they remain on the surface, it is likely your surface has a coating, and you must strip it away before you apply a Valspar coating. Purchase a coating stripper at your local home improvement center and follow the manufacturer's instructions to thoroughly remove the existing coating before you begin this project.

Test for excess moisture

Tape a 2' x 2' piece of plastic wrap to the concrete using duct tape on all edges. Allow the plastic to sit for 24 hours. If water droplets appear on the underside of the plastic, or if the concrete is damp, the surface contains excess moisture and should not be painted. You must correct the moisture problems before you begin this project or the coating will not penetrate the surface properly.

1. Use Valspar® Fast Prep All-in-One Concrete Cleaner to clean, etch and degrease the concrete surface before applying Solid Color Concrete Stain. Make sure you read and follow all the instructions on the package label, and keep children and pets away from the area while you are using the product. If your surface has tough oily stains, clean them first with Valspar® Oil Stain Remover before using Fast Prep.

2. Pour Fast Prep into a plastic watering can so you can sprinkle it evenly over your concrete. Do not use a metal watering can.

3. Use a garden hose to wet the surface first. Then, apply Fast Prep from the watering can in a sweeping motion until you have completely covered the surface. Scrub with a stiff bristle brush or broom. Fast Prep will fizz and bubble as it cleans, degreases and etches the concrete.

4. Rinse thoroughly using a garden hose until the water runs clean. Use a squeegee or wet-vac to remove rinse water, if desired.

5. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly (4-12 hours or overnight) before applying stain.

1. Before applying Valspar® Solid Color Concrete Stain/Sealer, stir Valspar® Anti-Skid Additive directly into the stain following all instructions on the package.

1. Mix Valspar Solid Color Concrete Stain/Sealer thoroughly before applying. Use a brush or roller (for larger surfaces) and apply stain in long, even strokes, working from wet to dry areas.

2. Allow stain to dry thoroughly, about 24 hours. For maximum durability, apply a second coat and let dry thoroughly again, about 24 hours before using the surface.

HELPFUL INFO: Surfaces naturally retain heat and are typically hotter than the air temperature by as much as 25 °F in direct sunlight. Darker stain colors may raise the temperature of your concrete surface by an additional 12-25 °F. Please consider this when selecting a color for areas with foot traffic.
