Valspar® Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

For optimal results, your concrete must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, oil or other contaminants before applying Valspar concrete coatings. Concrete that has been previously sealed or that contains excess moisture cannot be coated. To ensure your concrete is able to accept a coating, we recommend you test the surface as instructed below for moisture content and presence of obstructive sealer before beginning this project.

Test for presence of sealer

Sprinkle a few beads of water onto the surface. If they soak into the concrete, you're ready to begin. If they remain on the surface, it is likely your surface has a coating, and you must strip it away before you apply a Valspar coating. Purchase a coating stripper at your local home improvement center and follow the manufacturer's instructions to thoroughly remove the existing coating before you begin this project.

Test for excess moisture

Tape a 2' x 2' piece of plastic wrap to the concrete using duct tape on all edges. Allow the plastic to sit for 24 hours. If water droplets appear on the underside of the plastic, or if the concrete is damp, the surface contains excess moisture and should not be painted. You must correct the moisture problems before you begin this project or the coating will not penetrate the surface properly.

Step 1 — APPLY VALSPAR® FAST PREPTM & LET DRY

1. Use Valspar® Fast Prep All-in-One Concrete Cleaner to clean, etch and degrease the concrete surface before applying Solid Color Concrete Stain. Make sure you read and follow all the instructions on the package label, and keep children and pets away from the area while you are using the product. If your surface has tough oily stains, clean them first with Valspar® Oil Stain Remover before using Fast Prep.

2. Pour Fast Prep into a plastic watering can so you can sprinkle it evenly over your concrete. Do not use a metal watering can.

3. Use a garden hose to wet the surface first. Then, apply Fast Prep from the watering can in a sweeping motion until you have completely covered the surface. Scrub with a stiff bristle brush or broom. Fast Prep will fizz and bubble as it cleans, degreases and etches the concrete.

4. Rinse thoroughly using a garden hose until the water runs clean. Use a squeegee or wet-vac to remove rinse water, if desired.

5. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly (4-12 hours or overnight) before applying stain.

Step 2 — APPLY STAIN TO GET STONE LOOK

Valspar® Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain lets you create a natural stone finish, a uniform color finish or a mottled, multicolor finish depending on how you apply the product. To get the look you like, follow the coordinating directions below.

For natural stone finish

1. Dampen concrete surface with water and remove any puddles.

2. Fill an all-plastic pump sprayer with a semi-transparent concrete stain color of your choice. Spray it onto the damp concrete until you get the color and coverage that looks good to you.

3. Allow to dry.

For a uniform-color finish

1. Dampen concrete surface with water and remove any puddles.

2. Using an all-plastic pump sprayer, spray the stain generously onto damp concrete.

3. Back-roll using a damp 3/8" roller, to achieve an all-over, uniform color.

4. For a less transparent look, a second coat can be applied after the first coat dries.

For a multicolor finish

1. Dampen concrete surface with water and remove any puddles.

2. Use two colors of semi-transparent stain and put each color into a separate all-plastic pump sprayer or use a plastic spray bottle for the accent color. (Add a third color and sprayer or bottle if you would like to create a more mottled look.)

3. Spray one color of semi-transparent stain onto damp concrete until you like the color and coverage.

4. While the first color is still wet, randomly spray a second color over it to get a mottled, varied look. If using a third color, apply it randomly on top of first and second colors. The look you create depends on amount of color and coverage.

Step 3 (OPTIONAL) — SEAL FOR PROTECTION & GLOSS

1. Use a roller, brush or low-pressure garden sprayer to apply Valspar® Wet Look High Gloss Sealer evenly on the surface.

2. Allow the sealer to soak in for 10-15 minutes or until pores are completely sealed. If there is excess sealer on the surface, wipe it off before the surface dries.

3. If the sealer penetrates quickly, you may need a second coat, but you must apply it 2 hours after the first coat. If the surface is allowed to dry overnight, the second coat may not adhere.

4. Let dry thoroughly (12 hours) before using the surface.
